Hats
The range and variety of hats worn by Nisbet dolls was enormous, and sometimes, the distinction between hat and hairdo was tenuous, to say the least! Here, we have tried to provide some distinction between the different types, but as we are not milliners, we may require some input and correction from our more knowledgeable readers - If we have got it wrong, please tell us, and we will gladly put it right!
The range of hats worn by Nisbet dolls covers well over a thousand years of history, with styles ranging from the impractical to the ridiculous - but they all reflect the fashions and tastes of times gone by - Here are some of the more interesting!
The Liripipe
The Liripipe is the name given to the tail of a hood or cloak. This fashion, worn as a hood, (or long tailed hat) was popular across England and Europe at the time of the Wars of the Roses (1450 - 1500). We suspect that the long tail was often wrapped around the wearer's neck, to act as a scarf or comforter, and keep out the chilly draughts of castle living, in the depths of winter!
